Camp Mekokiko is a 36 acre property on the slopes of Kalopa State Park on the Hamakua Coast, just 7 miles from the historic old sugar plantation town of Honokaa, which is also the gateway to beautiful Waipio Valley. It is the only fee-simple camp property of the United Methodist Church in the State of Hawaii.
Historically it was given to the Hawaii Methodist Church in the 1960's by layman Dr. James A Mitchel. An arboretum of native endemic trees of the property bears his name. In addition to this the property hosts ......
The property rises toward Mauna Kea Summit from the North East corner of the property to the South West and will upon completion boast miles of trails winding through a rain forest. The camp is too big to view from any one place on the property. Walking along those trails when the camp is completed will reveal almost hidden among its trees, hills, and gullies a multi-purpose conference center, a crafts and activity barn, a chapel atop meditation hill, dorms, cottages, rustic camp sites, fire pits, pastures, an arboretum, meditation gazebos, and ancient historic artifacts.
A secure facility, in the rain forests of Hawaii, yet within a one hour drive of Hilo or Kona, it is an ideal retreat getaway for family, church, school or business, whether the need is modern facilities, or camping grounds with real dirt and grass sites for pitching a tent (and we've even covered most of them with wide roofs against rain to give campers the best of all worlds!).
